How To Use The Calculator

Upload the dataset containing the columns you want to compare. If both columns are in the same dataset, upload the same dataset twice. Click Perform Wilcoxon Text and go to Test Results tab to see the results. Click Help tab for additional information.

About the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test

The Wilcoxon signed-rank test is a non-parametric statistical hypothesis test used to compare two related samples, matched samples, or repeated measurements on a single sample to assess whether their distributions differ.

When to use this test:

  • When you have paired samples (before/after measurements)
  • When you don't want to rely on distributional assumptions (e.g. normality) for the validity of the test.
  • When you want to test differences in sample. See Warning! below.

Interpreting the results:

  • p-value < 0.05: There is a significant difference between the paired observations
  • p-value ≥ 0.05: There is no significant difference between the paired observations

WARNING!

A common myth about the Wilcoxon signed-rank test is that it can replace a paired t-test when normality assumptions are violated.

USE THIS APPROACH WITH CAUTION!

Indeed, Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test DOES NOT test for differences in means, and can be significant even for samples with identical means.

If you are not sure which test to run, reach out to a statistical consultant. At biostatistics.ca, we have a largge network of consultants that can help. Reach out by filling out a contact form and we will be glad to help!

Sample Dataset:

The sample dataset represents hypothetical patient measurements before and after a treatment, with the following variables:

  • PatientID: Identifier for each patient
  • BloodPressure: Systolic blood pressure reading
  • HeartRate: Heart rate in beats per minute
  • Cholesterol: Total cholesterol level
